Slime mold Infographic.

Medium: Adobe photoshop and illustrator

Client: Personal project

Purpose: This mini infographic briefly summarizes the biology of the slime mold Comatricha nigra, highlighting its life cycle and key features. It depicts the transition from amoeboid cells to its distinctive black sporangia, with a focus on the stalked fruiting bodies and spore dispersal, offering a clear and engaging visual of this unique organism.

Imagery

Photographic references of Comatricha nigra were first gathered from online sources to examine its texture, morphology, and coloration, complemented by background research on the species’ behavior. Special thanks to Barry Webb, Andy Sands, and Timothy Boomer for their reference imagery.

Ideation and Work in Progress

Rough thumbnails were first explored and refined into detailed sketches, each focused on illustrating the distinct structures of the fungus and the progressive color changes it undergoes from development to maturity. One sketch was selected and further developed into a black-and-white comprehensive layout, establishing the final arrangement of visual elements and accompanying text. Given the simplicity of the piece, a minimal color palette was chosen: a soft pink to reflect the natural hue of Comatricha nigra, and a muted brown to represent the decaying wood it typically inhabits.
